I've always pre-ordered The Hellequin Chronicles Books because it's a great story with a cool twist on mythology. With the penultimate book in the series all I can say is, "Buy the book! There's great character development and progression in this one."Ok, I'm too excited about the happenings in this book so I'm going straight to SPOILERS ALERT! DO NOT READ BEYOND THIS IF YOU DON"T WANT SPOILERS.Holy s***ballz! Nate and Mordred! It's also about time they had more back story on the dwarves and what happened to them.I like the little nuances in Nate and Mordred's relationship after finding out what happened to Mordred but I still don't fully trust Mordred. It will be interesting to see how Steve has those two working together even though Mordred thinks he has to kill Nate and Nate doesn't completely hate him. Can't wait for the last book to come out and I'm glad this isn't the end of Nate.Well done Steve!

This is Nathan Garret’s sixth adventure. It’s a complete story on its own, but several long running plotlines are coming together in this penultimate book in the series. Do not start here – go back to Crimes Against Magic (book 1).The former and once again Hellequin, Nate Garrett, has gathered allies to respond to impending events that would threaten the balance of power in Avalon. His enemies have careful plans though, and things never go quite as Nate intends. As usual for the the Hellequin series Promise of Wrath goes back and forth between the present and related events in Nate’s past. Various schemes of Nate’s enemies are building to a crescendo so there are a lot of important developments and reveals in all of the various times and places featured. Several long running themes and story threads come together here, as appropriate for the series’ penultimate adventure.I found Promise of Wrath to be a bit of a return to form for the series after the last installment (Lies Ripped Open). That book was ok overall, but it felt a bit stagnant as well as ending with a development I didn’t care for at all in the context of the series. The plot recovers nicely here, with said development actually leading to unexpected and intriguing story points. I hope things continue in this vein in the final book rather than going with the climax I expected. There are still a multitude of things to explain and deal with in the remaining book, but McHugh’s juggled a lot in each installment so far and I feel like he should be able to bring everything to a satisfactory conclusion. Looking forward to it and I hope things don’t run out of steam as this highly enjoyable series wraps up.

I am writing this for the whole series. Honestly I was not very thrilled after the 1st book, but I forced myself to go forward, hopping for the best. 1st person dialog is used, which makes a good development of the main character, however, because everything is seen through the eyes of one person, the rest of the characters lack depth, and it is hard to create a bond with them. As you encounter them many times through the story, you get to know them better, however, it is not ideal. You should keep going after 1st book, so do not give up just yet.The writing is getting better as the story goes on, less cheesy sex, and more action and adventure. In the last book the author gets half the book from 3rd person perspective, which is clearly an improvement in the writing style, and lets you get to know Mordred better. The narration is quite good, but it takes a little to get used with the narrator, which has some interesting intonations. The last 2 books are narrated by somebody else, which is not a plus(even if narration is good), as you get used with the original one through the previous 5 books. This being said, I recommend the books, and looking forward to follow the story into the Avalon Chronicles!

There was so much information packed in this story it's hard to unpack. Enemies become friends and friends become enemies. The fates are involved and that can't be a good thing. We unpack a bit more about Nate's past amd learn more abt his parents. Merlin is still a traitorous bastard. Remy is hysterical and a bit crazy.Spirit scrolls an interesting addition to this tale. I've read of them before and I'm wondering if it was a book by this author. The application of them was so similar its driving me a bit crazy.Honestly there is so much going on that you do not know how any of this will end. I just hope none of our favorites die. I do know they will go out swinging. As w any other book in this series, this is a must read. Too many important things happen. The only thing i didn't like is that i feel Nate lost a bit more control and he keeps forgetting what the psychic Liz told him in the last book. Although it looks like the first part of that has come through. Now its timw to show them Hell...

Perhaps the best book in this series, with the backstory/flashback tying in nicely with the main (present day) story. The backstory's conclusion was a bit "light", but did provide sufficient information and a cast-of-characters that proved helpful in the present. To date, the MC has primarily been an "action/reaction" type, which often gets a bit frustrating -- always rushing off into danger gets a bit annoying, and continuous action camouflages the underlying story and the general series ARC. I'm hopeful that the MC's blood magic "marks" are repressing a certain level of intelligence and, as those "marks" are released, the MC gains the ability to really "think things through"...This book covers considerable "ground" -- the release of several "marks" plus the introduction/expansion of the larger ARC themes gives the reader a great deal to think about. There are also several statements that are obvious foreshadowing, with interpretations left to the reader, as the MC generally "brushes them off" (at least for the present).All-in-all, recommended reading.
