I am using Windows 10 and own a copy of this book. The value of the book is in the "visually" that is in-bedded in the title. This is the third book in the "Visually" series I have purchased. I find it not nearly as useful as the one for Photoshop or Android. What you will get with this book is a lot of high quality screenshots of only the most basic uses of the operating system, and where their buttons to click are located. Likewise for the many apps that come with Windows 10. The book is task oriented. Want to shut down your PC? Go to the index and look for "shutting down Windows". You'll be directed to page 7 where you'll find the numbered steps for shutting down Windows. Each numbed step has a corresponding number on a screenshot indicating the button to push. Being dyslexic, I like this type of quick reference a whole lot, but the scope of the operating system and the generous bundle of apps Windows 10 includes is too great to be thoroughly covered by screenshots. I will be using this book, but I find myself wanting a detailed manual, possibly Windows 10 Inside Out.
I'm a "senior" and yes, my close-up vision is awful now, but this book is laid out so clearly and cleanly that I have absolutely no problem reading it. The pictures do help. And for any other doddering old fools out there who can only infer that we're all too outdated and dumb to learn Windows 10? It's not much different from anything else. Yes, Gen Xers and Millenials have changed the names of some things (Programs are now all Apps), but so what? It's the same stuff. I bought this book instead of the Seniors/Dummies book (how insulting is that?) book because of the reviews, and I'm glad I did. Clear, concise, and easy to deal with, my only complaint is that the index should be cross-referenced. (Some things should stay the same, guys, like a decent index.) A good purchase.
A friend of mine recently purchased a new computer with Windows 10 on it. I bought this book because I wanted to be able to help him with the use of his new machine. He is not into the "tech stuff" very much. I found the book very helpful with much of the things that you will find to be different from Windows 7 or 8.1. The book is very basic and walks you through the various sections with excellent visuals and simple step by step instruction. Once you get past the basic stuff, the books just does not keep up and I suspect another more in depth source will be needed. I anticipate needing to eventually upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 on my computer so I am glad I bought this book for starters. After the Windows 10 operating system gets all (or most) of the little bugs out, I'll need a more inclusive source of information. But for now, my friend thinks I'm very helpful. Hey, that's what friends are for, right!
This book is a life saver and very useful to users new to computers using the Windows 10 operating system. The screenshot photos show you exactly what the screen should look like and the step-by-step instructions tell you exactly what keys to press or where on the screen to touch. Photos are so very important to those of us who are visual learners. If you are a visual learner this book is for you. The 'Teach yourself VISUALLY' Series is the ideal way to get started when you need to SEE it rather than just read about it to fully grasp a topic.
Good purchase, but there are alot of filler Windows/pc details that could have been excluded. The language sometimes assumes you had Windows 8, ....then reverts to giving you info on operations that the typical Windows 95 user already knows.
Normally I get several books when a new OS is released because what one book does not cover, another will. I am very visual, so I like to see what screens look like laid out in color where most books don't. This book is what it is...visual. Using this book in conjunction with other books for more in-depth knowledge on a particular subject works perfect for me. The only con I have is that the print is too small on the pictures for "older" eyes so it can be taxing on the eyes.
This is a decent manual for the totally inexperienced user, but it is lacking in some more complicated 'how-to' items. Still it is better than the "dummies" series which I think are insulting to the average person. I have a very old IDG manual for windows 98 wich is still applicable in a few ways to current technology. I hope to find something similar for Windows 10.
I bought this ahead of our Windows 10 upgrade at work hoping I could get a leg up on the changes to the technical support. After I used it, I found out I could give it to my mother who was upgrading her personal PC. The book works not only for tech support but also for the basic end user. Great book for anyone!
