I'm a transplant from the Midwest and have been living in Arizona for five years now, in a community built in the desert, with natural open spaces between homesites, where native vegetation and wildlife thrive. I spend lots of time outdoors, and have always wondered what lives in the various holes and mounds beneath my feet. Which holes or crevices should I be most watchful of? What times of the day or climate conditions are these creatures apt to be active? And what exactly are the living arrangements inside these spaces?This book presents descriptions and illustrations of the desert critters and their homes. The book has had me looking more closely at the ground and understanding my little "neighbors" and which ones to steer clear of..... which was, of course, a big reason for my seeking out this book!!!
What's not to like? Great title, and content is actually interesting and useful. I purchased it mostly as a joke (and got a great response) but it's a valid reference book.
I did not find this book very useful as a field guide; poor illustrations for field work. I would have a difficult time identifying a tortoise burrow, and will find it difficult to know a K-rat hole from another rodent. It does have a lot of photos and drawings and some good general information regarding holes and what makes them. I would not recommend this as a must have for field biologists.
I need more photos.
