From the Publisher
This is the hardcover edition of Smith's classic book. It is also available in softcover under the title: "Digital Signal Processing: A Guide for Engineers and Scientists." The softcover version is slightly less expensive, while the hardcover edition contains an additional 23 page study guide to help newcomers to DSP. The Author's recommendation: Choose the hardcover edition if you will need DSP in the future, and the softcover version if your need is only short-term.

This is a great book and it is not a stretch (much of one anyway) to compare it with the classic Feynman text on Physics. I struggled thru Oppenheim’s text and his video lectures from 30 years ago. Oppenheim sometimes skirts over the subtle (in the video lectures anyway) and over emphasizes the more straightforwardly obvious. Oppenheim’s text is often less than clear and the excesses of explanatory verbiage actually muddy the concepts further. The end result in the Oppenheim book is that while specifics may be comprehensible, you never get a good intuitive grasp of the whole discipline of DSP. Smith’s book, on the other hand, starts gradually, building first on an intuitive and practical understanding of the subject before delving into the complex and confusing mathematics. This text is hugely successful in conveying a clear overview of the whole subject in the way Oppenheim’s is not. Smith’s book is perhaps less mathematically rigorous than a typical DSP textbook but you will have a good intuitive grasp of what DSP is really trying to achieve by the time the math comes in. I personally find the math less intimidating than trying to combine the mathematical with the practical. The math is subtle but not formidable. What is hard is understanding the math well enough and having a good enough intuitive grasp of the subject to apply the mathematical tools in unfamiliar situations. Smith achieves this I think as well as anyone could.I think this book combined with the Schaum DSP outline book will give you as good an introduction to this field as you are likely to get. Highly recommended.
I started reading this book online by chapters because I wanted to learn about Fourier Transforms. That reading exceeded my expectations on my understanding without getting deep into the weeds of mathematics. I was reading it online so often, I decided to go for this hard copy. I find new chapters in the hard copy such as digital image processing and the Z-transform that were not in the online version. The chapters are well organized and any engineer or serious experimenter or inventor will be able to select a specific topic and understand the concepts of Digital Signal Processing without a deep mathematics background. You will need a good foundation in high school Analytic Geometry and the Pythagorean Theorem. Basic calculus would help but you only need to understand logarithms and what the Sigma summation symbol means. With that basic understanding, you will be on your way to being a DSP expert.
This is without question the best academic book I've ever read. Mr. Smith is so articulate and clear. He starts at the very beginning and approaches each new concept carefully, building on the concepts you've already read about. Usually when I'm having difficult understanding something, I find he has already answered it in the previous page. His presentation is logical, intuitive, and on occasion entertaining. It's concise and well-formed but not off-putting like the majority of text books I've read. All the information is there and in plain English. A monkey (who understands English, of course) could read this book from start to finish and be an expert in DSP.I found the pdf online but ended up buying the book just because it was so good and I wanted a copy to make notes in and cherish.
I've really needed to know about DSP for a while, so I decided to dive in. The inter-webs said that this was the right book, and it sure is. Cleanly written, it has nicely filled in the math fuzzy patches from classes 40 years ago, and then proceeded into the good stuff. I am getting it strictly under self-study, and it is helping with an app I am building.I bought the book, but couldn't wait to start, so downloaded all of the on-line chapters and started working through them. When the book arrived, I found it wasn't an exact match: the author's web page has a few extra chapters near the end. But it is the same great stuff. I will continue through all this on the beach over the next week. It has been a while since I have been this excited about math.
This is among the best textbooks I've ever read. I expected dry but useful information, but this books is so well written that not only is the information present in a clear manner but it's a pleasure to read. The nice thing about the book is that it gives you enough to understand the material and then implement it without getting lost in the details of abstract mathematics. As a computer programmer I have found this book extremely useful.
This is an incredibly solid and readable introduction to DSP. I'm not the most mathematically inclined person, and I was able to follow along and program (in modern languages) these concepts afterwards. Concepts are introduced in a logical order, complete with their practical motivation and various caveats that might otherwise confuse someone new to the subject. As others have said, the code examples are in FORTRAN and thus not particularly useful, but I wouldn't have traded this for a book where the code was clearer and the concepts less accessible.
Far superior to any text on DSP that I used in undergraduate or graduate school in terms of making the material easily accessible and cogent. Read this book to discover the most rapid way to get up to speed and use these techniques in your work. The most advanced topics are not covered, but for 99% of us this is all you'll ever need. This book is distributed chapter by chapter in PDF form on the internet, but after reading the first 4 chapters I decided that I would buy the book as a definitive reference, and frankly, because Steve Smith DESERVES to get income from this.If you need to use DSP in your work this reads like a good novel. Steve's shift in perspective on this very technical topic simplifies, illuminates and keeps you reading.
I liked the fact that all the information is in the book. It was heavy on the math. The programming information was in BASIC with all the jumping around GOTO statements that made following the program quite hard. I was able to get a convolution program running, but my Fourier Transform was too slow to use. I ended up going another route to solve my problem,
