I know a novel requires that there is a problem the hero or heroine must overcome, but it always bothers me just a little when a strong supporting character from a previous book becomes the main character in his own story and his life has suddenly become miserable. That is the case in this book. "The Virtuoso" is Val, short for Valentine, and he is the youngest son of the Duke of Morland. He is the youngest of four brothers and has always been the one that felt ignored. He was too young to participate in his older brothers' activities and ended up following them around like a puppy. But he was always the most concerned of their sisters' needs and ready to escort them whenever he was needed. His only skill is playing the piano and he is inded a virtuoso. He has been known to forget to eat when concentrating on his music, and the music communicates his feelings better than he is able to with words. The repetitive motion had caused painful inflammation in his left hand and the doctor told him if he doesn't stop playing the piano he may never be able to use the hand without terrible pain.Val has won an estate from a wastral and debauched Baron even though he tried to convince the man he should quit before getting into more debt. The man practically forced Val to "play just one more hand and give him a chance to win some of his money back". When Val goes to inspect the property he finds it is in shambles. Because he can't play the piano anymore Val thinks distracting himself with physical work will make him feel better emotionally and give him a sense of accomplishing something. Several of his close friends from other books by the same author come to help him repair the house on the estate so he will have a place to live. Also on the estate is a small cottage surrounded by beautiful gardens where, Ellen, the beautiful widow of the previous Baron lives. Her husband's heir, Freddy, is the debauched dandy who lost the property to Val, but he is still not out of Ellen's life. He is holding something over her that forces her to give him all the money from the rents and profits from the parts of the estate she still owns. Her husband had not trusted Freddy to provide for Ellen and had set up his will so she would be well taken care of and Freddy would only get a quarterly allowance. Freddy is greedy and evil and has no qualms about doing everything he can to keep Ellen under his thumb. Both the H and h have secrets they try to keep from each other because they don't trust their relationship to survive if the secrets were known. Ellen doesn't feel comfortable with titled people, Val wants to forget he ever played the piano, he doesn't want Ellen to know his father is a Duke, neither of them want to get married but they are falling in love and fear loosing each other. And is someone trying to kill one of them by sabotaging things around the property? Is it the tenants who want to run off the new owner? Does someone want Ellen dead? Are they practical jokes that have gone too far? There are lots of detailed sex/love scenes. Very little foul language, very little violence, the writing is good, editing is good, no major spelling or grammer errors that I noticed, and a very nice ending.
Book three of the Windham family is another very good read. Valentine has won an estate in a poker game and immidiately goes to see his prize, but most of all to recover from a hand injury which has ended his former life as a pianist of repute. By taking himself to the country he hopes to be away from his usual haunts and the Duke of Moreland and thus avoid the temptation to play before he is recovered and also avoid the Duke's incessant nosiness. But Val's "prize" has turned out to be a run down estate with a somewhat acerbic neighbor, Ellen Markham. Ellen, is actually the Duchess and by rights owns the estate that her brother-in-law squandered in the poker game. But Ellen has secrets to hide and thus lives in the small adjacent house on the property where she grows and sells her herbs. Normally a duchess as a widow would be well looked after in her husbands will, but that is another secret Ellen hides. As she and Val rub each other the wrong way at first and then just the right way a bit later, Ellen's secrets loom in the background threatening to tear the couple apart. Burrowes once again weaves her magic and readers are whisked away to be with the Morland family and their acquaintances who once again meet adversity with dogged determination and a heart full of love. After reading the Soldier and the Heir this book seemed pretty tame as I'd already gotten to know Val and his good natured quietness. But that is the side he shows to his family, about a thrid into the book you discover that Val is as much a hero and powerful man as his brothers.
Grace Burrowes is a very talented writer, and she creates characters you come to really care about. This is a good thing, as the first three books in the Windham series are basically the same plot, with different people and settings. The Heir: duke's heir, burdened by the demands of running the duke's estates, spends the summer in London and falls in love with a women beneath him in social status who is keeping deep, dark secrets. The Soldier: duke's illegitimate son moves to his new estate in Yorkshire and falls in love with a woman beneath him in social status who is keeping deep, dark secrets. The Virtuoso: duke's piano-playing son injures his hand, travels to his new estate in Oxfordshire and falls in love with a woman beneath him in social status who is keeping deep, dark secrets.Nevertheless, I enjoyed these books and may even reread them some day, despite the repetitive nature of the major and minor plotlines (each brother makes love exactly the same way, as if, in addition to a fencing-master, they had a f---ing master to teach them the perfect steps; each one likes to brush and braid a woman's hair; if a woman is pregnant, and they all are before the wedding, she sleeps and cries a lot).Probably, if you don't read them one after another, as I did, the repetition is less bothersome. I'm still giving The Heir three stars, but four for the others.See my review of the Windham series at http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/240638362.
I absolutely love Grace Burrowes Windham novels. Her writing is compulsively readable and engaging, and her characters are beguiling, entertaining, and just plain wonderful. My only quibble is that she seems to emphasize her heroines monthly courses a lot, in all of her books. This is not something I’m used to reading in any novel, let alone a romance. I’m inclined to be a little jealous of a character whose period starts on a Thursday and is done by Sunday, and whose only complaint is a tendency to be moody just before it starts.
